About the Opportunity

Our thriving Courtenay and Victoria branches are looking to add talented and enthusiastic Community Planners in both locations to join our existing team of professional planners, engineers, and other professionals working with local communities in and around Vancouver Island.  

Our planning practice excels at providing professional planning services to clients who are dealing with the interconnections between governance, policy, finance, community design, land use, mobility, and infrastructure. More and more of our clients are looking for innovative ideas and customized solutions based on an integrated perspective of these fields.

This opportunity presents two successful candidates a significant opportunity to directly contribute to the growth of Urban Systems’ Vancouver Island planning practice, drawing on resources both locally and across our Western Canada branches.   Both positions are anticipated to start in January 2021. As these positions are part of our Vancouver Island team, it is possible to work out of either our Courtenay or Victoria location. As a member of our Island planning practice, you can expect to be involved in:

  • Conducting research, analysis, and report writing;
  • Researching best practices;
  • Supporting communication and engagement;
  • Providing interpretations of legislation, regulations, and policies;
  • Assisting in the preparation of planning documents and preparing presentations for public meetings;
  • Collaborating with the existing team to develop public engagement materials such as open house panels, newsletters, brochures and community surveys; and
  • Attending meetings and liaising with clients.

About You

Our preferred candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree; however, preference will be given to candidates that hold a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning or a related field. The ideal candidate will be registered as a professional planner with the PIBC and has 2 to 5 years of planning experience, providing community planning services to a variety of clients including municipalities, regional districts and Indigenous communities.

The following attributes would be key to success in this role:

  • Commitment to the planning profession and the role of planners in facilitating connections between other disciplines;
  • A solid understanding of infrastructure and land use planning, including policy development, implementation, and the regulatory approval process;
  • Capabilities in graphic communication (preferably including but not limited to Adobe CC Suite) and a willingness to act as conduit to our internal visual communications team.
  • A service-oriented mindset with a passion for serving urban, rural, and indigenous communities on Vancouver Island and throughout Western Canada;
  • A self-starter who is opportunity-seeking and looking to expand and/or grow entrepreneurial traits and behaviours;
  • A belief in the value of teamwork and demonstrated ability to collaborate, learn, and think creatively when working with a range of perspectives;
  • A willingness and desire to work in a variety of practices areas for a variety of clients;
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated proficiency in writing, verbal, and visual communication;
  • Strong organizational capabilities, demonstrating project management skills and the ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects with variable teams and competing deadlines;
  • A demonstrated aptitude for research and the ability to efficiently and quickly translate complicated concepts into materials and deliverables for various audiences;
  • An ability to make connections with colleagues and industry partners demonstrating curiosity for process, opportunities, and personal development;
  • Ability to speak publicly and strong presentation skills delivered to council and/or planning commission; and
  • You are willing to travel and work with communities large and small.
