Our established Kelowna office is currently looking for a capable and enthusiastic civil engineering co-op student to join our team for an 8-month co-op work term starting in May 2018.   We understand the need for you to have meaningful work terms during your co-op education so we strive to create opportunities that are challenging, multifaceted and rewarding. Our goal is for you to come away with an enhanced skill set that will serve you well in your future career as a professional engineer. We are expecting that this position will involve a variety of project work, working with seasoned veterans and recent graduates alike. You will be involved in project work related to municipal infrastructure design, water resources and land development and have the opportunity to work with our Local Government, Indigenous communities, Land Development and Water practices.   Typical duties may include:   - Spreadsheet development and utilities analysis; - Hydraulic modeling (water, sewer and storm water); - Cost estimating; - Site investigations and/or construction inspections; - Public engagement; - Technical writing and communications; and - Project support and administration.   This is not an exhaustive list and in keeping with our philosophy of “hands-on” learning and growth, you will be given as much freedom and responsibility as you demonstrate you can handle.   About You   Our preferred candidate is currently enrolled in a civil or civil environmental engineering co-op degree program, is available for an 8-month work term, is in either their 3rd or 4th year of study, and has some previously related experience. Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following skills, strengths and interests:   - You have been exposed to municipal servicing design principles;  - You wish to round out your skills and knowledge with exposure to some of the following: water, storm water and sewer infrastructure design, hydraulic modeling, road design, preparing grading plans and residential/commercial development; - You are a self-starter that can work independently and collaborate effectively with others; - You are attracted to the consulting industry with the ability to work with a variety of clients, contractors, and other consultants; - You have experience or interested in gaining experience in construction inspections; - You are known for producing high quality work under all circumstances; and - You desire to work in a fast-paced environment with a team of professionals who are deeply committed to exceeding client expectations.   About Us   Recognized as one of Canada’s top employers, Urban Systems is an employee-owned inter-disciplinary consulting firm based in Western Canada. This is an opportunity to live and play in the North, while joining a tight-knit office working on unique assignments that are helping to create resilient and vibrant communities across the BC Peace Region.    As a Civil Engineering Technologist/Technician, you will be responsible for assisting the team in translating high level conceptual designs from preliminary, through to detailed, design. The entire spectrum of work is something that our DPT members navigate and explore every day. Specifically, you can expect to be involved in:   - Carrying out design tasks and/or AutoCAD assignments - Supporting engineering personnel in field, design, drawing production and/or construction specifications - Ensuring quality control and verifying accuracy of design production work - Communicating with project leaders - Performing a variety of defined assignments with independent judgment - Advising team on technical challenges and troubleshooting - Assisting with project timelines and directing work flow - Promoting and instilling a sense of teamwork amongst members   As part of our launch process, the successful candidate will be required to spend their first 4 weeks of employment in our Kamloops branch for training purposes.
